Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Patient Story:
Julia Unger, 19, Denver, Colorado
Hello. My name is Julia Unger I am 19 years old, and I was born and raised in Denver, CO. I was diagnosed with Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS) on August 27, 2019. My symptoms started in October/November of 2018, usually in connection with my menstrual cycle, then became multiple times a month. I ended up in the hospital for all of these episodes (a total of 25 times in almost a year). I went undiagnosed with every possible test ran, and all I got from ER doctors is that I was healthy. I had blood tests for celiac, minor surgeries (endoscopy), GI doctors, dietary changes and I was only getting worse by the day. I was devastated I couldn’t figure out a reason why I was going through such severe bouts of vomiting, dehydration, and pain. I wanted to know what was wrong.
I went to a GI doctor back in April of 2019, and they had mentioned something about Cannabis causing these sorts of things. I shrugged it off and kept smoking and using CBD.
Then finally in August of 2019, a doctor came into my room and told me I had CHS. I did not believe him and then I started researching and came across a Facebook group. I was accepted into the group and started reading stories. I was shocked, mortified really, that Cannabis could be doing this to me. Ever since I joined that group I have been sober. I am back to doing things that healthy people do and I cannot be happier. I can work without losing a job, get out of the house, go to the store, etc.
My best advice to anyone experiencing this would be to quit while you are ahead, this can cause more damage than ever imaginable. There is an enormous amount of people who are going through the same thing. I’m happy to be where I am today 5 months sober.
